Because it’s a contract position, I know that Contract Houses charge outrageous hourly rates so I adjusted my rate accordingly.
When asked what my salary requirements were, I said: “I did some research and found that an appropriate hourly rate for this type of position is in the $28-$30 range so if that’s in the realm, that would be fantastic.” It was in the realm.

James Hardie Building Products

Interior Sales Representative
Current status in the interview process:
7/17 – Offer was extended but I’m still undecided. Relocation is mandatory and promotion eligibility is possible approximately 9 to 24 months after hire.
7/14 – Interview day! I arrived in California Wednesday night at about 11:00 p.m., picked up my car they provided, drove to my hotel they provided, got 3 hours of sleep and still managed to arrive at the interview 15 minutes early. Let me tell you, the interview is quite a process. First thing I did was took a 1 hour long personality profile test. Then, there were a series of 3 interviews, me versus 2 managers. All in all, it was a great learning experience and, although it was challenging, it definitely helped increase my resilience and endurance for long interviews. Great bunch of people though. The interview ended at about 12:30 and my flight home was at 2:00 so, as you might imagine, I had to hustle to be on time for that.

6/22 – He called me back and we went through a 30 minute phone interview so he could ask me questions to see if I would be a good fit for the position. After confirming that I was fine with the amount of travel involved with this position, he said: “Sounds great! I’m going to go ahead and recommend you for an interview with James Hardie direct!” Awesome, I thought! Then, to my surprise, he said: “the interview is in California, are you available on 7/14 to fly out?” “Sure, I said!” The James Hardie staffing coordinator called me later in the day to give me flight details.
6/21 – Called and left a voice mail for the recruiter.
6/15 – Called Hirequest to see if could find out which recruiter was handling the James Hardie position. Bingo, got his name, phone number and email address. Instantly emailed my resume directly to the correct recruiter. The idea here is to try and make direct contact with someone instead of just sending your resume and having it end up in some database somewhere.
6/12 – Found this job posting on Careerbuilder and emailed my resume to the National Recruiting Specialists over at Hirequest.
